Hello Cats' sires and dams are genetically tested to ensure they are negative for the following common diseases.
Genetic testing is an essential tool for ensuring the long-term health and well-being of Ragdoll cats. While this breed is renowned for its gentle temperament and striking beauty, Ragdolls—like many purebred cats—can be predisposed to certain hereditary health conditions. Three of the most important to screen for are Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), and Mucopolysaccharidosis Type VI (MPS VI).
HCM is the most common heart disease in cats, caused by a genetic mutation that thickens the heart muscle and reduces its ability to pump blood efficiently. In Ragdolls, a specific mutation (R820W) is known to be inherited. Genetic testing identifies cats as clear, carriers, or affected, allowing breeders to avoid producing kittens at risk. Early detection also enables owners and veterinarians to monitor heart health and manage the condition if it develops.
PKD is a hereditary condition that causes fluid-filled cysts to form in the kidneys, potentially leading to kidney failure over time. While more common in Persians, PKD can occur in Ragdolls through ancestral crossbreeding. A simple DNA test can confirm whether a cat carries the PKD1 gene mutation, helping breeders eliminate it from their lines and ensuring healthier kittens.
MPS VI is a rare but serious inherited metabolic disorder caused by a deficiency of a specific enzyme, leading to skeletal deformities and growth issues. In Ragdolls, a known genetic mutation can be detected through testing, allowing breeders to ensure that carriers are not paired together, thus preventing affected kittens from being born.
For breeders, genetic testing is a cornerstone of responsible breeding programs, helping protect the health of future generations and preserving the breed’s integrity. For owners, it provides valuable insight into their cat’s health risks, enabling proactive veterinary care and early intervention if needed.
